Kate Bush, Stranger Things, and the glorious return of a vinyl classic
On May 27, 2022, Netflix released the fourth season of Stranger Things ... and with it, it brought back something no one expected: the triumphant return of Running Up That Hill and its creator, the incomparable Kate Bush. Today, in our Choose the Artist section, she takes center stage.
And the song became a global phenomenon. If you hear it and it makes your skin crawl, you're not alone. You probably already have it on your playlist... or on your shelf, on one of those vinyl records that are making a comeback stronger than ever.
Who is Kate Bush?
Many have only recently discovered her. But Kate Bush is no rookie. This British artist has been making history for decades. At just 19 years old, she shot to number one in the UK with " Wuthering Heights ," a song inspired by Emily Brontë's novel, becoming the first woman to achieve this with her own song.
Since then, her career has been synonymous with originality: composer, pianist, producer, and dancer, mentored by David Gilmour (yes, the Pink Floyd one). Since the 1970s, Kate has been a constant presence among music lovers and collectors of the most valuable vinyl records .
The song that changed everything (twice)
Running Up That Hill was released in 1985 as part of their album Hounds of Love . It peaked at number three in the UK, but didn't make the splash it deserved. The original title ( A Deal With God ) was considered too controversial, so it was changed to avoid any problems.
And now, 37 years later, this song has broken historic records. It spent 20 weeks in the UK Top 100 and made Bush the oldest female artist to reach number one. It was all thanks to her appearance in Stranger Things , in a scene so powerful it left everyone's hair on end.
Stranger Things, the series that rescued a classic
The scene where Max escapes from the "upside down" with Running Up That Hill playing in the background became one of the most memorable moments of the series. Coincidence? Not at all. It was a very thoughtful choice by the creators of Stranger Things , who knew this song had something magical about it. And boy did they achieve it.
The fourth season was a long time coming, but it arrived with a bang. Executive producer Shawn Levy explained that the delay was a result of the pandemic and an ambitious production that demanded more than ever from the crew. But the wait was worth it.
The vinyl effect
With the success of the series, record stores were flooded with requests for the Hounds of Love album. If you're a vinyl collector, you've probably already reserved your copy. And if you don't have a place to store them yet, it's time to think about a good vinyl record cabinet or the best vinyl storage to preserve these treasures the way they deserve.
At Keep Them Spinning , we know how special it is to have an album like this in your collection. It's not just a song from the past: it's a work that has united generations, from those nostalgic for the '80s to those just discovering its power.
And you, have you already joined the Kate Bush phenomenon?
You might have never heard her name before Stranger Things , but now it's hard not to admire what she represents. If you haven't listened to Hounds of Love in its entirety yet, now's your time. Press play, dim the lights, and let the vinyl do its thing.
And if you have room in your closet for vinyl records , this album is a must-have. Because some songs come back... but only the great ones stay.
