Scratch-Free Vinyl: How to Load It on Your Turntable
Share
Is this your first time with vinyl? Don't worry, I'll explain it to you without any hassle!
If you're just getting your first record and you've picked up your first record, you're probably thinking, "Now how the heck do I put it on without messing it up?" Don't worry, putting on a vinyl record is much easier than it seems. And it also has its own ritualistic quality that's addictive.
Here's a quick, no-nonsense guide so you can enjoy it from the first spin.
1. Turn on your turntable and check the mode
Some modern models have multiple playback modes: Bluetooth, USB, etc. Make sure it's in vinyl mode so everything works as expected.
2. Remove the vinyl from its sleeve (but carefully)
This step is key. Remove the record by holding it by the edges and avoiding touching the surface. Place it on the turntable, centered. If you're using one of those wooden record cases , make sure it's clean inside to avoid dust on the record.
Bonus tip: If you have plastic sleeves for vinyl records , always use them. They're a great way to preserve them.
3. Gently lower the needle
If your turntable has an automatic function, just press the button and the needle will lower itself. If it's manual, place it firmly but without pressing. Practice makes perfect, don't be afraid!
4. Adjust the needle weight (if necessary)
Some models allow you to adjust the tonearm counterweight. This ensures that the needle rests on the vinyl with just the right amount of pressure for a clean sound without damaging the record. Consult your model's manual and ensure it's properly calibrated.
5. Press play and let the magic begin!
All you have to do is spin the platter (either manually or by pressing a button) and sit back and enjoy. The warm sound, the crackles... you're now in the world of vinyl.
Basic care for your vinyl records (so they always sound great)
- Use an anti-static brush or microfiber cloth to clean the vinyl before applying it.
- Don't leave your records stacked up; instead, store them in a vinyl record storage box or well-ventilated storage cabinet.
- Also, clean the needle from time to time. There are specific kits that are wonderful.
Now that you know how to apply vinyl, get going!
There are no more excuses: turn on your record player, take out your favorite album, place it carefully, and immerse yourself in the analog sound. Vinyl is more than just music; it's an experience. And if you pair it with a good collection in a nice, well-organized piece of furniture, even better.
