Original vinyl records: How to identify them?

How to tell if a vinyl record is original (and not be fooled)
Have you ever picked up a record at a flea market that seemed like a gem... only to turn out to be a flop? Well, that's what happened to my friend Raúl the other day. He stumbled upon some bargain vinyl deals and, of course, got taken for a ride. So we took the opportunity to do a mini workshop at home: how to spot if a vinyl record is original and not a cheap copy. If you're also starting your collection or want to make sure you're not being ripped off, read on.
1. The cover: where everything sings
First, the cover. If it looks too photocopied, with faded colors or no clear details, beware! Many forgeries fail here. If you know the original design, you'll quickly notice. There are old editions that are true treasures, and forgers know this. That's why they copy iconic covers to pass them off as first editions.
Quick Tip: Look for original limited editions and compare them on sites like Discogs before you buy.
2. Play the record (yes, literally)
Original vinyl records have texture and weight. Play them. If they feel too light, have print smudges, or look like "cheap plastic," start to get suspicious. Raúl pulled out one that looked like it was pressed yesterday... but it was supposedly from the 70s. White and in a bottle.
3. Record label: it has to fit
Check the record label carefully on the center label and on the back of the sleeve. If it's poorly printed, with blurry letters or strange names... bad! An original music vinyl always has well-defined details, without printing errors or "made-up" logos.
4. Listen to it on a record player
Nothing beats a sound test. If it sounds bad, with distortion or weird interference from the start, be suspicious. A cheap copy won't have the same sound quality, even if you look at it with affection. Turn it on and listen. The ear doesn't deceive you.
Tip: Make sure your equipment is properly calibrated and your stylus is good. And if you have the record mounted on a good vinyl rack , even better. The more you care for the environment, the more you'll notice if something goes wrong.
5. Beware of bootlegs and reissues
There are pirated vinyls, known as "bootlegs," that come with live recordings or unauthorized material. Some sell them as rarities, but the quality is questionable. Furthermore, they are often mistaken for legitimate reissues. Do your research before paying more than they're worth.
How to avoid vinyl record scams?
Here are some golden tips to avoid getting scammed:
- Do your research before you buy: look for information about the edition, catalog number, country of origin, cover, stamp, etc.
- Buy from trusted sellers: from specialty stores or platforms with good reviews.
- Ask for real photos of the vinyl: cover, back cover, center label… everything you can.
- Check the physical condition of both the disc and the sleeve. The originals show some natural wear.
- Listen to it first if you can: or at least find an online sample of the actual sound of that release.
Bonus track: how to care for your original vinyl records
If you already have authentic gems at home, take care of them properly. Store them in a good record case , keep them away from sun and dust, and give them a worthy home: you can use wall shelves or a good vinyl record rack to keep them always close at hand and protected.
